Ds Awareness Month Story – Kenzie

The story below was written and submitted by Kenzie’s mom, Dona

Kenziimg_4942e is promoting inclusion and acceptance every day.

She rides the regular school bus just like every other kid in the neighborhood.  She is in a regular second grade classroom all day, just like other kids.

I just got an email from a woman that I do not know nor have ever met.  She wanted to tell me how excited her daughter was to be in the same class as Kenzie this school year.

She attends PSR (Parish School Religion) just like the other kids at our local catholic church. Every Sunday she attends the class.  She will be receiving her first communion this spring just like the rest of the second graders in her PSR class.

Kenzie is a cheerleader for our church league.  She cheers at basketball games. She is on a cheer squad with typical peers.  My daughter is considered non-verbal. She does the motions/cheers and loves it.

Kenzie is treated just like her sister and brother.  She has chores and does her homework like them.  She gets in trouble and loses privileges when she makes mistakes.

She can swim without a life vest and loves jumping on the trampoline.  She loves playing barbies.  Kenzie enjoys watching things on YouTube.  She enjoys doing things just like her peers.
Kenzie goes to the YMCA and loves to play in the childwatch room.

She is in Girl Scouts.  She is in a troop with all typical peers that meets at a local school.

She loves pizza, french fries and guacamole.  Her favorite restaurant is McDonald’s and asks to go all the time.  She loves eating out at restaurants.

Everywhere we go people are very accepting.  We expect people and places to continue to accept her.
