Maria Haberman

American Electric Power (AEP)

Maria is a government affairs professional with nearly 15 years of experience working on state policy, regulatory, and political issues. She is the Managing Director of Government Affairs for American Electric Power, responsible for all state legislative policies that impact the overall Ohio Market from an electric utility perspective.

In this role for AEP, she is responsible for public policy, community and government relations, as well as building and maintaining external relationships with legislators, consumer groups and other Ohio stakeholders. She leads the Company’s activities to shape public policies and coordinate and ensure effective AEP representation on national and state-level industry associations. Maria also oversees the company’s community involvement role and corporate giving for AEP in Ohio.

Prior to joining American Electric Power in 2015, Maria worked in the Ohio Senate for six years as a legislative aide for two of Ohio’s state senators from east and southeast Ohio. During this time, Maria traveled throughout 10 of the state’s most rural counties to develop grassroots policy initiatives. Those areas of focus included energy, transportation, tax, and agricultural matters, in addition to running the senate office and managing district communications.

Additionally, Maria serves on the Capitol Square Foundation board where she launched the Capitol Conversation series, uniting the statehouse community around events that promote Ohio. Other board memberships include the Ohio Chamber Research Foundation, Ohio Business Roundtable Government Affairs Committee, and the Women’s International Network of Utility Professionals and is the first female Chair of the Ohio Electric Utility Institute.

Maria graduated from The Ohio State University in 2010 with two Bachelor of Arts degrees in Sociology and Women’s Studies, focusing on political contexts and social change.
