The Down Syndrome Association of Central Ohio (DSACO) was incorporated in 1984 with one purpose in mind, to accomplish our mission to support families, promote community involvement, and encourage a lifetime of opportunities for people with Down syndrome. We believe this can be achieved by providing families and individuals living with Down syndrome with meaningful, convenient, and unique opportunities to discover independence and to celebrate their achievements.

Family Navigator, Black and African American Families

Job Title:  Family Navigator, Black and African American Families 

Supervisor:  Program Manager of Diversity Outreach 

Pay Range: $22/Hour  

Status: Part-time, flexible hours 

Location: Hybrid  

Position Overview

The Family Navigator for Black and African American Families is responsible for ensuring that we provide the highest quality services to all of our families by accurately representing the rich ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic diversity of the people with Down syndrome in our community. The primary duties of this role include connecting families in an effort to establish a compassionate and supportive community, collaborating with the DSACO team to advocate for families and link them with resources, overseeing relevant groups and events, collecting data to provide feedback on community needs, and assisting with program development. 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Actively recruit new families who are not yet involved with DSACO and increase engagement with existing and new minority families. 
  • Serve as a liaison between DSACO and existing and new minority families by providing insights, recommendations, and implementation alongside DSACO team. 
  • Explore and establish partnerships with community organizations and businesses to enhance and expand collaborative minority outreach efforts. 
  • Promote inclusion and recruit participation for DSACO events. 
  • Assist in planning, promoting, implementing, and evaluating DSACO-hosted educational seminars and programs for minority families. 
  • Respond to calls and emails requesting community linkages and referrals, as well as other requests. 
  • Connect and collaborate with other organizations that serve DSACO minority membership. 
  • Provide cultural expertise and support to DSACO to expand outreach efforts to intentionally engage new families. 
  • Maintain complete documentation on programs, seminars, and events. 
  • Represent DSACO at applicable community programs, resource fairs, and networking events. 
  • Assist with writing articles for DSACO newsletter. 
  • Support DSACO fundraisers and events through assigned duties as needed. 
  • Provide updates and reports, on a regular basis, to Program Manager of Diversity Outreach. 
  • Attends and participates in professional growth training and conferences as assigned. 

Qualifications

  • Passion for the mission and vision of the Down Syndrome Association of Central Ohio. 
  • Familiarity and ability to empathize with the developmental disability community. 
  • Successful completion of background check and other pre-hire requirements as set forth by the organization and according to state and federal rules and regulations.  
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality with personal information. 
  • Strong communication skills and outstanding ability to maintain and foster relationships across a diverse set of individuals. 
  • Capable of working independently as well as part of a team. 
  • Ability to effectively and strategically communicate with people with Down syndrome and their families. 
  • Ability to maintain clear and organized notes and documentation. 
  • Willingness to work outside of normal business hours, including on weekends and nights, as required by events.

Certified Educational Professional, Summer Learning Academy

Job Title:  Certified Educational Professional, Summer Learning Academy

Supervisor:  Program Manager of Education and School Age Services

Pay Range: $30/Hour ; Compensation covers 57 hours of classroom instruction, along with a maximum of 20 hours for planning and evaluations. 

Status: Part-time, contractor

Location: Bexley, Marion, or Pickerington

Position Overview

Each year, DSACO hosts its Summer Learning Academy (SLA) program, which provides 5 weeks of academic instruction for children with Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities. This year, the Summer Learning Academy will have classrooms in Bexley, Marion, Pickerington, and Worthington. Each SLA classroom serves eight children with Down syndrome, or other developmental disabilities, on an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Each classroom is led by a team of two certified educational professionals and one classroom support professional. Certified Education Professionals will serve as the classroom teachers. Summer Learning Academy teachers are responsible for planning and providing instruction, monitoring and documenting student progress, and sharing feedback with partners and parents.
The primary goals of the programs are to:
  • Address IEP literacy and math goals
  • Minimize learning loss
  • Improve math and reading skills
  • Improve social development

Qualifications

  • Certified in special education or elementary education.
  • Ability to create a learning experience based on students’ needs.
  • Ability to collect data, monitor progress and use data to guide instruction.
  • Demonstrated class management skills.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Must be willing to complete a background check.
  • Considerable physical activity – requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be available for the majority of the program length.
    • SLA runs from June 9 – July 10, from 9am – 12pm, on Mondays – Thursdays.

Classroom Support Professional, Summer Learning Academy

Job Title:  Classroom Support Professional, Summer Learning Academy

Supervisor:  Program Manager of Education and School Age Services

Pay Range: $15/Hour ; Compensation covers 57 hours of classroom support, along with a maximum of 10 hours for classroom preparation and cleanup (only between the hours of 8:15am and 12:15pm).

Status: Part-time, contractor

Location: Bexley, Marion, or Pickerington

Position Overview

Each year, DSACO hosts its Summer Learning Academy (SLA) program, which provides 5 weeks of academic instruction for children with Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities. This year, the Summer Learning Academy will have classrooms in Bexley, Marion, Pickerington, and Worthington.   • Considerable physical activity – requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be available for the majority of the program length.
    • SLA runs from June 9 – July 10, from 9am – 12pm, on Mondays – Thursdays.
